Featured Speaker

Dr. Merredith Portsmore is the Director for Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (www.ceeo.tufts.edu) and a Research Associate Professor.. Merredith received all four of her degrees from Tufts (B.A. English, B.S. Mechanical Engineering, M.A. Education, PhD in Engineering Education). She currently leads the Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach supervising grant administration, fundraising, and strategic planning. Her research interests focus on how children engage in designing and constructing solutions to engineering design problems and evaluating students’ design artifacts. Her outreach work focuses on creating resources for K-12 educators to support engineering education in the classroom.

How can we use the books already in classrooms as a starting point for hands-on engineering? Initially funded by the National Science Foundation, Novel Engineering is an approach developed by Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach that integrates engineering and literacy in K-8 classrooms. Books provident the clients, criteria and constraints for hands-on design projects that support students engaging in careful reading, analysis and writing tasks. This session will provide an overview of the Novel Engineering approach to integrated learning and engage participants in a short sample challenge.
