We are excited to launch our Explore STEM @Home Programs! We know your youth are anxious to connect with other youth and engage their minds through hands-on activities. We are here to help you!

This is not your “normal” online program…

Youth will complete a series of hands-on activities offline, at-home while receiving guidance from STEM professionals via live video conferencing. Youth can choose to engage with instructors and other youth as little or as much as they want! Twice a day is a scheduled time for youth to connect online and learn about and reflect on the hand-on, experiential activities for that day.

Here is what you need to know…

  1. One- and two-week online educational program options available.
  2. Immersive hands-on activities guided by live, online instructors.
  3. Moderated Virtual Room for youth to engage with the instructor and interact with the other participants while working on their physical projects.
  4. Opportunities to engage with professional scientists, engineers, and other STEM professionals.
  5. Scheduled online “Live” Time to include:
    • interactive icebreakers and games,
    • virtual tours,
    • interviews and Q&A with industry professionals, and more!
  6. Asynchronous option with all virtual tours, interviews, and activity instruction recorded and available to view at a later time if your youth misses a “Live” Time session.
  7. Upon successful completion of the program, youth will be mailed a Completion Award Package* valued at over $50!

Explore Engineering A: Solving Everyday Problems

Program Description

This program is hands-on right from the beginning as youth work to build Rube Goldberg inspired machines. Using various household objects, youth are tasked with developing a wacky solution to situations they encounter every day. Although the materials are simple everyday objects, youth will use them to apply different properties of physics and engineering. Youth will be guided by the Minnesota State Engineering Center of Excellence staff and industry professionals. Having fun and being creative are the top objectives as youth twist and wind their way to a solution.

Each week of this program will be a new experience for youth! In the Extended! program youth will take a deeper exploration into engineering principles and careers while solving engineering challenges.

Explore Engineering B: Let Your Imagination Grow!

Program Description

During this program, youth will invent a machine to help a sick friend while staying 6 feet away. Concentrating on hands-on problem solving this program is designed to allow youth to let their imaginations grow – mentally and physically! Youth will complete a series of engineering design challenges that lead to the creation of a large scale Rube Goldberg inspired machine. With activities such as building a marble roller coaster to building a tower of cards, there are many challenges to be had. This project can grow with your child’s imagination so it is recommended that a minimum of 6-foot by 6-foot space be available to build this wacky contraption.

Each week of this program will be a new experience for youth! In the Extended! program youth will take a deeper exploration into engineering principles and careers while solving engineering challenges.

Explore STEM: Powering the World through Transportation

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Not sure what opportunities await you in STEM? Join us as we explore many of the possibilities. This program will focus on Powering the World through Transportation! The steam engine revolutionized the way the world moved. Since its inception, there have been many advances in the field of transportation driven by STEM careers. Whether it be installing satellites in space or getting a package to your door there are countless ways that transportation powers the economy of the world and makes the products you use every day possible. Join us as we take a look into how the world’s goods are transported by STEM through activities such as building Alka-seltzer rockets, designing sink paddle boats, and much more!

With many STEM pathways to follow there is one overriding commonality between them all – problem-solving! Through this program, youth will work on finding a solution to a problem as they explore the interconnectedness of STEM. This program offers many opportunities for youth to get creative and explore STEM!

ADVENTURE STEM BONUS!

When exploring new places, the images that often capture the world’s attention are those of a person planting a flag on the summit of the mountain or even the moon – but what happens after that picture? Explorers, such as the scientist and explorer Jacques Cousteau, are often far more than hardy explorers – they are often competent in other fields related to STEM. Join us as we explore your backyard or neighborhood park mapping out routes and exploring what roles STEM plays in exploration and adventure. Activities such as wildlife identification and mapmaking will keep the youth engaged as they explore their local ecosystems. During this program, youth will be strongly encouraged to go outdoors during activity times and should be prepared to do so.
